Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 4 Actvitiy 1

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights [4 points]
Aotearoa New Zealand is a country of mountains and valleys, dense forests, and sparkling oceans. At the centre of the South Island sits the tallest mountain in the country, Aoraki Mt Cook. It is the place where Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the top (summit) of Mt Everest, learned how to climb mountains. It was pretty difficult for him, at first, but Sir Edmund Hillary did not give up and, in 1953, he achieved this dream of climbing Mt Everest. His face can now be found on the New Zealand $5 note!
Let’s imagine that you met Sir Edmund Hillary in real life and were able to interview him.

1. What motivated you to accomplish your dream.
2. When you reached the summit of the mountain what was the first thing that came to your mind?
3. What did you do on the summit of the mountain?
4. Who did you climb with to the summit of the mountain?
5. What happened when you came back down from Mt Everest?

  1. Talofa lava Solomone,

You've come up with some really thoughtful questions for Sir Ed. I imagine it would have been a super interesting conversation had you been able to talk to him.
Are there any mountains around where you live? I live close to quite a few in central Auckland. My favourite would be Rangitoto though - I like that you have to catch a ferry out to it.

    Bye for now,

    Mikey :)
