Summer Learning Journey Day 5 Activity 1

There is a long and rich history of logging in New Zealand. Logging involves cutting down trees. The people who cut them down are called loggers. The trees that they cut down are sold and used to build things (eg. houses), to make products (eg. paper), and to generate (create) heat and power. Over the past two centuries, many of the trees in New Zealand have been cut down by loggers.

Some people like logging because it creates jobs for the loggers and generates money for New Zealand while others are against (opposed to) logging. Many of those opposed are worried that logging will damage the environment. It might also force animals who live in trees (eg. owls) to find new homes.
What do you think about logging?

I think that we should and should not do logging because
Bad reason
1. Gonna take away all our air.
2. Will kill the creation that Tane Mahuta made.
Good reason
1. To make paper so that we can write and draw.
2. To make houses so that we can have shelter from the rain.

  1. Kia ora Solomone,

My name is Mikey. I'm a member of the Summer Learning Journey team, along with Lee, Izzy, Patricia and Sophie. It looks like you've been super busy, completing lots of activities - well done! :)

It's an interesting issue, isn't it? Like you've said, logging has it's pros and it's cons. If we did stop logging, can you think of any other materials we could use to build our homes?

What do you think about the idea of planting one native tree for every tree that's cut down by the logging companies? That way we'd have plenty of trees to produce oxygen for us and Tāne Mahuta's land would not be completely destroyed. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

I look forward to reading more posts from you soon, Solomone. Until then, happy blogging! :)
